About the Farmer
Meet Sarvdaman Patel: The Heart and Soul of Organic Farming
Welcome to the world of Sarvdaman Patel, a trailblazing agronomist and the driving force behind the Organic and Biodynamic movement in India. With a rich tapestry of experience and passion, Sarvdaman demonstrates that you can embrace sustainable farming without compromising on productivity.
A Journey Rooted in Passion
Armed with a Bachelor’s in Agriculture and Animal Husbandry from Govind Ballabh Pant University of Agriculture and Technology, and a Master’s in Agronomy from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, Sarvdaman honed his skills over 18 months of hands-on experience on dairy farms in the USA. Yet, the call of his ancestral land was too strong to resist. In 1975, he returned to India to cultivate his own 40-acre paradise.
The Organic Awakening
Sarvdaman’s early years were marked by traditional practices that left him unfulfilled. A few pivotal experiences sparked a transformative journey into organic farming: dwindling yields despite fertilizers, a farm worker’s near-fatal pesticide incident, and troubling health issues among his livestock. These moments became turning points, compelling him to dive into organic farming in 2000.
The results? Remarkable. Within just a year, the health of his soil and animals flourished. Diseases that once plagued his herd vanished, proving that sustainable practices lead to a bountiful and resilient ecosystem.
Biodynamic Breakthrough
In 2005, Sarvdaman’s farm welcomed Peter Proctor, the father of modern Biodynamics, who spent nearly a year helping to alleviate Sarvdaman’s practices to a new level. Together, they created a thriving biodynamic farm that has become a model for others.
A Communicator Extraordinaire
Sarvdaman is not just a farmer; he’s a master storyteller and educator. His infectious enthusiasm captivates aspiring farmers, drawing them into his vibrant world of anecdotes and insights. Gather around with him in the evenings for laughter and good spirits.
Today and Beyond
Currently working as a consultant who has consulted various farmers and organisations like the tibetan settlement, NANDI foundation, etc. He served as the president of BDAl, Sarvdaman’s expertise is sought after by expert panels and training programs nationwide. He has taught and trained more than 1000 farmers through his annual workshops on vegetable production and Biodynamic farming.
